Home Remedy for Dog Skin Allergy

When a dog has a skin allergy, it is miserable with itching. With a bit of trial and error, however, you should be able to find a home remedy for dog skin allergy that will help the poor pooch endure its agony. Since most allergies are caused by things like pollen, mold, and dust, a starting point is to vacuum often and use an air purifier.

Dogs with skin allergies often lick and bite at themselves until they make the skin raw. This irritated place becomes swollen and infected, and becomes what dog owners commonly call hot spots. Fortunately, there are some home remedies you can use to treat those hot spots. For best results, try to trim the hair from around the spot, if the dog will let you.

Here's a recipe for a wash that is helpful to use on hot spots. Make a cup of strong tea (not herbal). Add 2 adult aspirins and a tablespoon of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. You can dissolve the aspirin in the alcohol before adding it to the tea. When the solution is cool, dab it onto the hot spot with a cotton ball. This is best followed up with a bit of cortisone cream from the store.

If you'd rather not use the hydorcortisone cream, you can follow the aspirin wash with a bit of vitamin E oil. Simply pierce a capsule with a needle and squeeze it onto the sore. Another home remedy for dog skin allergy that is good to follow up the wash with is a bit of aloe vera gel.

If the allergy your dog has is an allergy to flea bites, there are home remedies for getting rid of fleas. Try pressing half a clove of garlic into the dog's food every day. This is a safe and healthful addition to your dog's diet. Another flea remedy is to rub brewers yeast or nutritional yeast into the coat of the dog. Also to repel fleas, add a few drops of penny royal herbal tincture to the shampoo you use when bathing your dog.

It is safe to give your dog over the counter diphenhydramine at the rate of 1 mg. per pound twice a day. This is a human medicine used for allergy relief and to induce sleep. Check the labels of OTC allergy and sleep preparations for this remedy. Don't choose a medicine that combines the diphenhydramine with other medicines, though.
