Dog Holistic Ear Infection

Treating your dog holistically is a lot like treating yourself - don't do it if you won't be responsible for monitoring the results and making the decisions. Be honest with yourself. If you are afraid to self-treat, then by all means rely on a vet for your pet's health.

A dog holistic ear infection treatment for ear mites lasts a full six weeks and requires putting drops into the dog's ears just like a veterinarian would recommend. The drops that are used are what are different, as well as, the length of the treatment. Veterinarians use antibiotic, antifungal, and antibacterial drops for a week to ten days.

The holistic approach is to use a mixture of 1/2 ounce of almond or olive oil and 400 IU vitamin E in a dropper bottle. Warm the mixture to body temperature and put about 1/2 dropper full in the ear, massaging the ear canal well for a minute or so. Let the dog shake its head and then gently clean out the opening with cotton swabs. This treatment must be done twice a day for six weeks.

The dog holistic ear infection approach is this: "The traditional treatment for ear infections is to give antibiotics, antifungal drugs or other medications. The problem with this approach is that medications upset the normal chemistry inside the ear, possibly turning a simple infection into a complicated, long-term problem.

It makes more sense to deal with underlying allergies and strengthen the immune system so that it is able to battle bacteria and other germs before they cause infection. In addition, there are many natural treatments for cleaning the ears and stopping infections without using drugs."

The recommendations for accomplishing this are using vinegar to clean the dog's ears regularly, using the herb pau d'arco, which comes from the inner bark of a South American tree, giving dogs vitamin C and feeding a healthful, homemade diet or high quality commercial food that doesn't contain wheat, corn, additives or preservatives. It is also recommend increasing air circulation inside the ears to control the growth of bacteria, yeast and fungi and to trim or pluck hair inside the ears.
